Megger meter

A megohmmeter, or megger, is a device used to test electrical and insulation resistance. This is usually done by sending a high-voltage signal into the object being tested, typically a wire or motor. Using a megger is important for avoiding electric shock and equipment damage.

How megger test is performed?

Megger Test Procedure To measure electrical leakage in wire, we pass the current through devices then; we verify the electrical insulation level in any device such as a motor, cable, and transformer. The result of this can be measured in terms of Mega ohm.

Is a megger the same as a multimeter?

The multimeter can be used as an ammeter, an ohm meter, or a voltmeter. Meggers are used to measure insulation resistance.

What do megger readings mean?

If the megger reads a resistance under 1 (1,000 ohms) on your meter after the initial 60-second interval, the cable has failed and the cable should be removed. If the megger reads a resistance between 1-1.25 on your meter, then the cable passes. Any reading above 1.25 is considered excellent.

Where is megger used?

Megger: Megger is a portable instrument to measure high insulation resistances. It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction.

Is a megger AC or DC?

The megger has a DC generator inside it. The DC generator may be of manual type of or electronic. It generates a high DC voltage. The positive lead of the megger has its connection with the current carrying part.

What is the minimum megger value?

Insulation resistance should be approximately one megohm for each 1,000 volts of operating voltage, with a minimum value of one megohm.

How does a megger measure resistance?

The Megger insulation tester is essentially a high-range resistance meter (ohmmeter) with a built-in direct-current generator. This meter is of special construction with both current and voltage coils, enabling true ohms to be read directly, independent of the actual voltage applied.

What is megger value of motor?

Insulation resistance valueInsulation level
2 Megohm or lessBad
2-5 MegohmCritical
5-10 MegohmAbnormal
10-50 MegohmGood

What is the advantage of megger meter than ohm meter?

Megger is used to measure insulation resistance and other high resistance values, It is also used for ground continuity and short circuit testing of electrical power system. The chief advantage of the megger over an ohmmeter is its capacity to measure resistance with a high potential or breakdown voltage.

Can you do a megger test with a multimeter?

The buttons and rotary control are very intuitive and the backlight is excellent. The test probes will be used frequently, with a multimeter too.

How do you megger wires?

Clamp the alligator clip on one of the megger probes to the wire or cable, touch the other probe to the exposed conductor and press the test button. The megger will generate a current between the probes, and the meter will record the resistance of the jacket to the flow of the current.

Can a megger damage a motor?

Any megger with a higher voltage output than 500 volts DC should be used by an experienced technician. A high voltage for too long of a time may further weaken or fail motor windings and the winding insulation could be damaged by the testing procedure.

What causes low megger readings?

Longer runs will result in lower insulation resistance values. Two conductors have consistently lower values: Because the conductors adjacent to the ground conductor only have one layer of insulation, those conductors will have lower insulation resistance and the Megger values will be lower.

What is a good insulation reading?

Readings should be greater than 1MΩ for an Earthed system, or 2MΩ for Class 2 or “floating” systems. Ideally this reading should be as high as possible. PV150 can read up to 19.99MΩ, and the PV200/210 up to 199.99MΩ. A good result would be “>19.99MΩ” on the PV150, and “>199.99MΩ” on the PV200/210.

What is unit of megger?

A Megger consists of an EMF source and voltmeter. The scale of the voltmeter is calibrated in ohms (kilo-ohms or megohms, as the case may be). In measurements, the EMF of the self-contained source must be equal to that of the source used in calibration.

What are the types of megger?

THE THREE TYPES OF MEGGER INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTS

  • SHORT-TIME OR SPOT-READING TEST. A short-time or spot-reading test is performed by simply connecting a Megger insulation tester across the insulation that is being tested.
  • TIME-RESISTANCE METHOD. ...
  • DIELECTRIC ABSORPTION RATIO.

How megger produce high voltage?

A “megger”. Or insulation tester uses a DC to DC converter to obtain the high voltages needed to test insulation from a 6 volt battery supply.or uses a hand wound generator to produce the same in early insulation testers.

Why DC current is used in megger?

The accurate insulation resistance can be done if the DC voltage is applied to measure the megger value. That is why a megger has DC generator.

How is megger voltage calculated?

Test Voltage for Meggering: When AC Voltage is used, The Rule of Thumb is Test Voltage (A.C) = (2X Name Plate Voltage) +1000. When DC Voltage is used (Most used in All Megger), Test Voltage (D.C) = (2X Name Plate Voltage).
